Obama, Clinton visit Edwards

February 11, 2008 · No Comments

Hillary Clinton made a trip to visit John Edwards over the weekend, and today (Monday) Barack Obama intends to stop by North Carolina after rallies in Maryland. Obama and Clinton seek his endorsement.

Clinton said, “There is a lot that John and I have in common… And I intend to ask John Edwards to be part of anything I do.. when I’m in the White House.”

Why Edwards?

  • his voters

On Super Tuesday he did win 415,000 Democratic primary and caucus votes. Presumably, many of the votes were early votes that were cast before he withdrew, but 100,000s still came out and voted for him knowing that he had exited the race.

He won 10% of vote in Oklahoma.

  • his delegates

He only commands 26 delegates, which seem too little to be worth much of an effort by the front runners who command upwards of 1,100. The race is very close right now–Clinton has a 27 delegate lead.

I wonder why Edwards holds out. Does he not like any of the front runners or want to ensure he endorses the winner? Or is he still playing his cards and waiting for the best offer?

More importantly, why do news agencies report Obama and Clinton’s visits as “clandestine” and “secret” when everyone knows about them?
